A Journey of Encounters
In Biblical history there is a man who perhaps is the best known man in human history. His quest is a central theme to all Biblical history. Abrahams journey lead him to encounter and discover that God alone has the ability to do what no one else can do.
Abrams journey begins with a call. Leave your comfort, culture, and class
According to tradition Abram was the son of an idol maker (Terah) in the land of the Chaldeans – Ancient Mesopotamia (Southern Iraq). The city of Ur in Sumer was well advanced. The culture was pagan and pantheistic. We’re told that God called to Abram while he was still in Mesopotamia to come out of that culture, comfort, class and follow God.
Once in the land of Canaan Abram would need to navigate Challenges
· Challenges of detours, dangers and dead-ends
A severe famine sent Abram on a detour south to Egypt (Ch. 13). Returning to Canaan Abram experiences danger in the form of Tribal warfare (Ch. 14). Plus the constant challenge of dead-ends (barrenness). (Ch. 16).
Abram was going to learn that there is only one who has the ability to do what no one else can do. Only God Almighty can fulfill Destiny.
13 years after Ishmael is born the Bible tells us
17:1 When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to him, saying, “I am God Almighty. Live in My presence and be blameless.
24 years into the journey / 13 years after attempting to fulfill his own destiny / Abram encounters Almighty God – El Shaddai – the God who has the ability to do what no one else can do.
Encountering God’s Presence brought Transformation to Abram.
God’s Presence Transforms us.
Abram’s name changed to Abraham.
Abram’s faith changed.
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac. He received the promises and he was offering his unique son, 18 the one it had been said about, Your seed will be traced[g] through Isaac.[h] 19 He considered God to be able even to raise someone from the dead, and as an illustration,[i] he received him back.
Not that long ago Abram would question God’s ability to give him a son / God how can you do this? Abram laughed, wondered, doubted?
Abram goes from this thinking … to believing that God is able to raise someone from the dead! Abram, wondering if God can do it …to Abraham whose God is able demonstrate His resurrection power! God is able!
The Encounter with God Almighty (El Shaddai) brought transformational growth, and maturity to Abraham’s walk with God. Presence does that.
Consider asking yourself a question: Where are you with in your journey with God?
Have you responded to His Call to come out of the world’s mentality, culture, standards, worldly living and walk according to how He says to live?
Have you navigated the Challenges? Have you been lost in detours / overcome by potential dangers / allowed dead ends to keep you from fulfilling your destiny?
Have you encountered the transforming Presence of Almighty God?
Consider encountering His Transforming Presence. Seek Him. Ask Him. Walk in His Presence.
